About Beltsville Maryland
Like most of the surrounding area, Beltsville began as vast farmland, mainly focused on tobacco. The area would see a great population increase during the 1700s when iron ore was found in the ground. This opened the door for much iron production, which the local companies took the opportunity to supply the United States military with cannons, ammunition, vehicle parts, and much more throughout both the revolutionary and civil war. Beltsville would continue to enlarge as roads and railways would expand through the town and would receive its official name to commemorate a local landowner, Truman Belt. Today, Beltsville is known not only for the immense farming land, but for the numerous scientific research centers and their contributions to many different fields of science.
