About Clinton Maryland
Previously known as Surrattsville, up until the civil war, the town of Clinton, Maryland was a crossroads town – based solely on its location between other high populated areas in the state. Majority of the buildings in town were municipal buildings such as post offices. The town of Surrattsville became famous for its role in the assassination of former president, Abraham Lincoln. The town was that in which John Wilkes Booth, the gunman, stopped for weapons and supplies.
Along with this, it was found that Booth conspired with the Surratt family and due to its close resemblance of the town name, Surrattsville was renamed to Robeystown. It wouldn’t be until 1879 that the town would receive its current name, Clinton. Throughout the 1900s,
Clinton would improve and grow, adding much development and infrastructure. The major local economic boom would occur during the 1950s, when Andrews Air Force Base would expand to border the town Into today, Clinton has continued to hold its reputation of being very friendly and inviting, having many thriving local businesses.
